I was somewhat surprised when this hand was played against me in only 3
♥ and then declarer only made 8 tricks when there were various ways to make up to 11 tricks. After winning the spade continuation at trick two it is now a sensible idea to play clubs and hopefully finesse the Jack to chuck a loser (either a spade or a Diamond).
So you should cash the king followed by a finesse of the Jack which wins. You can now dump a Diamond.
Now play Heart Queen ready to finesse- up pops the King and you should Ace it. The statistics now say that the Heart suit is more likely to be 3:1 than 2:2 so go over to dummy with the Diamond Ace and now finesse West for the missing Ten when West follows low insert the 9 which holds.
Now draw the last trump and you make all the remaining tricks except a spade.
You eventually made 1 Spade, 6 Hearts, 1 Diamond and 3 clubs losing just 2 spades.
You can also play out the following hand to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe
programme and it is available free from
