At the 11th hour, your partner suddenly Doubles the final contract. What can it mean? This Double is known as a LIGHTNER DOUBLE named after Theo Lightner of USA who invented this Double to ask for an Unusual lead, usually against Slam contracts but equally beneficial here. It asks partner to find an UNUSUAL LEAD, generally dummy's first bid suit.
Therefore you will a) have to lead a Diamond b) Inform your partner what suit you want led back with a suit preference signal.
You should dutifully lead ¨2 leading the suit partner has asked you to lead and at the same time telling him you want a Club back next (the Club Ace being your entry).
Partner ruffs the first trick and now plays a Club to your Ace and you give him another ruff and the defence now takes three tricks before declarer has had a chance to draw trumps. The defence has made two Aces and two diamond ruffs.
