In order to make 9 tricks, firstly you have to get in and secondly you have to block the run of the Heart suit.
When this hand was played against me, declarer foolishly covered the Heart Jack and then the defence prevailed with EW taking the first five tricks in Hearts.
What clue(s) are there to stop the run of the Hearts suit?.
The clue is given at trick 1 when the ♥2 is led showing exactly a four card suit. Therefore declarer must continue to duck the first four Heart tricks and after 4 tricks West is run dry of Hearts and now declarer gets in and can take the next 9 tricks by way of 2 Spades, 2 Diamonds and 5 clubs.
