In Match Points every overtrick is vital and this hand is no different from any other.
After a Heart is led you are able to win the first trick with your 9.
You take stock and see you have 1 Heart in the bag together with 2 top Spades and 6 running Diamonds – that’s your contract.
Where to go for a 10th trick ? Whilst in the dummy you could do a club finesse but which club would you play ? Would you finesse the King and play East for the missing Ace or finesse the Jack playing East for the missing Queen. All a bit of a dilemma and putting the contract at risk if you guess the Club position incorrectly. There is a much safer way to generate a 10th trick. West is sure to have the Heart Ace so if you play a Heart now you can generate one extra trick in Hearts now and your club holding is still safe. Why is it correct on this occasion to play back the opposition’s suit ? Well if you don’t do it now but play off all your Diamonds then you will not have an entry to the dummy later for the established Heart winner.
Therefore at trick 2 Play a Heart and now you have the all important overtrick.
You will make 2 Spades, 2 Hearts and 6 Diamonds for a well above average score without ever putting your contract in jeopardy.
