I think the most important aspect t of good defence is PATIENCE and this hand from the Red Sea bridge festival 2021 more than demonstrates how important patience is.
What do you make of partner's ♥7 discard to the second trump. It look very much like a Mckenney discard asking for the higher ranking suit. So when you get in with the Heart Ace now you must play a Diamond and watch as partner wins with the Ace and plays back a club and you defeat the contract by one. Patience paid off and you made 2 Clubs and 2 Red Aces.
Many players who see declarer throw off a Club panic, and would play a club when getting in the the Heart Ace. This merely gives declarer the 10th trick. If you do not switch to Diamonds now, declarer will manage to throw another club away on the Heart queen which has now been set up.
