On this hand you have just an initial count of 6 winners – 3 Ace Kings.

If the trumps break 3:2 then you will have two more trump tricks bringing the total to 8. You will therefore need to find two more. The lead is more likely to be from a Queen than an Ace so therefore you will need to let the first trick come around to your hand.

The tenth trick will have to come from a successful Club finesse. There is no point in ruffing Clubs, because if you do that you are ruffing in the long hand and you have already calculated those tricks in your trump trick assessment.

So you let the first trick come around to your Jack.. East wins and fires Back a Diamond. You draw two rounds of trumps ending up in hand and take a successful Club finesse. On the third round of Clubs you can now discard a Diamond loser.

You will take 4 trumps, 2 Hearts, 1 Diamond and 3 Clubs.
