The obvious thing to do is trump trick five and then draw trumps and rely on Spades breaking 3:2 or being in a position, to finesse the Ten if the spades were to break 4:1.

However, if the Spades were 4:1 and you were unable to finesse the 10 you would go one off. So is there any other way to try and make this contract without relying on Spades behaving?

Yes, instead of relying on Spades ruff a second Heart in hand, and make your contract from 4 Hearts from the long hand two Heart ruffs and three top Spa\des.

With this in mind you ruff the Club continuation. Draw two rounds of trumps ending in dummy Now trump one more club. You. Have now more trumps left in hand and the trumps have broken 4:1 but you are still in control. Enter dummy with top Spade and because your original trumps were so good (AKQJ109) between the two hands you can now draw the last two trumps and claim your contract.

(NB Had you drawn trump and relied on Spades on this hand you would have got home BUT is it the best line – that’s what you have to ask yourself?)

You can also play out the following hand  to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.videoes.html or BridgeBase programme on your machine already to view it )
