On the third round of Hearts you must trump with the ª8 (to at least get a High Spade out from East) overtrumped with the Jack out from East who gets off lead with a Trump and you take stock. If East started with 5 trumps, then East still has a trump to come plus the Diamond Ace and you have no chance. However, if East started with four trumps and West has one of the top trump honours you still have a position against East in trumps.

With this in mind, go up with your Ace, delighted to see the Queen fall. Firstly, the Theory of restricted choice suggests that East has the touching honour (10 still left- the Jack was a false card at trick 3) and also East Doubled the final 3ª contract.

You now play a Diamond towards dummy and East takes his Ace and plays back another Diamond. You win in dummy and now finesse East for the missing ª10. You draw the last trump.

Because the Jack and Ten of Diamonds fell in three rounds all your wonderful intermediates in Diamonds became high and now you no longer need to rely on the club finesse.

You eventually amassed 5 trumps, 2 Diamonds 2 Clubs (3 Diamonds and club ace went on 3rd Diamond) .
