West leads ¨K,
Playing MP’s where every overtrick is vital, plan your play.
Initially you have 8
top tricks – 6 trumps and 2 Aces. If you draw trumps you will have no trumps
left in dummy. Therefore to build an overtrick you are going to have to ruff a
Diamond in dummy, the short hand, before drawing trumps. So after winning the
first trick immediately play a Club from hand. East will win with the Club Eight
and play his Spade King. Win this with dummy’s ace and play another club which
East wins . East will now play a top Spade which you ruff. You can now play a
Club and ruff it high with dummy’s Queen to avoid any possible embarrassment
of being overruffed by East. You can now draw trumps and claim 9 tricks :- 6
trumps 1 Aces and a high ruff in the short hand.
