On our South hand we might have opened 1ª but decided against it. After partner opesn1§ and West intervenes with a pre-emptive 3H we can now bid 3ª confirming a five card suit (otherwise we might have made a Negative Double with only four) and North raises to Game.
After the expected Heart lead we take stock and initially seem to have 7 winners by way of 3 top trumps, 1 Heart and 3 top Clubs. On the losers front we have 1 possible spade if the spades break badly, 1 Heart and a Diamond.
The Heart loser can be disposed of on th 3rd round of Clubs.
The secret of playing this hand is to play the cards in the correct order.
So after winning the first trick we must immediately unblock the clubs and play the King Queen.
We now need to draw trumps ending in dummy after the third round so we can dump the Heart loser.
We draw three round of trumps disappointed to see the 4:1 break. However we are now in dummy to chuck the Heart loser on the club Ace. The Jack falls in three rounds so we can now play that winning Ten and chuck a Diamond. Now it’s a matter of knocking out the Diamond Ace and amassing 11 tricks.
W made 4 trumps (losing just one) 1 Heart, 2 established Diamonds and 4 clubs for a very good Match point score.
