When this hand was originally played against me on ok bridge declarer drew two rounds of trumps and could not recover
After some bizarre bidding you end up in 5♦ and the opposition leads a Spade and you take stock.
If you were to draw trumps and the trumps broke kindly you would be a trick short at the final hour. You would make 2 natural trumps, 6 cross ruffs and just two more Aces so you need to think again. You need to combine your chances of setting up a suit and cross ruffing.
With this in mind as your longest outside suit is Hearts you embark on the hearts straight away at trick two intending to set that suit up. East wins the first heart and of course plays a trump.
You now play a second Heart on your journey to set the suit up. East wins but without another trump gets off lead with a spade.
Now your troubles are over as you can now ruff and indeed make your contract from a complete cross ruff losing just the two hearts.
You now make 1 Spade, 1 Club, 1 natural high trump and 8 separate cross ruffs with the opponents helpless as you cannot be over-ruffed.
