My expert opponent played this hand to perfection.
On the surface it looks like you have 3 losers-1 Club. 1 Heart and 1 Diamond.
However he realised that all his Club losers could be despatched to the Spade suit in dummy provided he was careful with the trumps. making sure he had enough entries back to dummy if the Spade suit could eventually be established.
With all this in mind, he trumped trick 2 with the ♦9 keeping his low trumps to eventually get back to dummy's 8 or even 5.
He now played a top trump taken by West who switched to the ♠7. He now won this trick in hand and unblocked the second top Spade before entering dummy with the carefully preserved ♦8 making sure he played the ♦7 from hand in case the spades didn't break he would still have the ♦4 as an entry back to dummy if needs be. He now played the Spade Ace and when all followed was able to claim.
He made 6 Diamonds, 1 Club and 4 Spades ( in fact not needing to ruff anything apart from the second trick).
