Our hand this week demonstrates when you should hold up and when you should not hold up..

Now lets rewind and consider the hold up play. Initially you have 5 winners by way of 1 Diamond, 3 Hearts and 1 Spade. In order to make the contract you will have to drive out the Club Ace and hope the Heats break 3:3 (its your only hope here apart from somebody holding a doubleton J10 of Hearts))

Now to the aspect of  holding up at trick 1? When you hold up and the opponents could switch to another suit which could give you as much grief the DON’T HOLD UP. The suit to give you equal grief here is Spades so you must not hold up and you will have to hope either Diamonds break well 4:4 or the defenders manage to block the suit.

Therefore you win the first tricks and do not hold up  and immediately set about establishing the Clubs. You play a low club to the Ten and a club back to you King. West takes the Ace and proceeds to cash out winning Diamonds. However the defence can only take three Diamonds. When the Hearts break kindly you now bag up 9 tricks by way of 1 Spade, 4 Hearts, 1 Diamond and 3 clubs losing just three Diamonds and the Club Ace.
