With your balanced hand you open 1ª intending to rebid in No Trumps. Partner replies 2¨ (start of delayed Game Raise and after rebidding 2NT to confirm balanced 15/16, partner finishes his message off and rebids 4ª.

After the lead the hand looks like a doddle, and you might think you could make more and might have bid more.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well if the trumps break badly (4:1) are you up to the task of keeping control of the hand?

After winning the first trick, you cash a top spade from hand followed by the Spade Ace in dummy to discover the bad news.

In order to make the contract you will have to ruff one heart in dummy so drawing the remaining trumps at this stage is not a good idea. So put the drawing of trumps on hold and play a Heart from dummy and play your Jack.

West wins and plays a second Diamond and when you play low from dummy East ruffs. West led from a five card suit. East plays a trump to try to cut back on your heart ruffs but now you are in the driving seat and the rest of the hand should be plain sailing.

You will make the rest of the tricks with two clubs, 2 more diamonds and a club ruff in hand and a Heart ruff on table.

You made three trumps, 1 Heart, 3 Diamonds, 2 Clubs  and 1 club ruff and 1 heart ruff or put another way you lost 1 Heart and one ruff.
