This hand came up on OK Bridge website and fortunately my partner had never attended any of my bridge lectures where I preach ALPS- Always Lead partner’s suit. Instead he thought the hand out and realised that South might have a good holding in Clubs sitting over me and now led a Passive ©6.

I won the first trick and now played a §9 knowing either partner had a good holding in Clubs or none at all. Declarer not unreasonably played low and after winning the King duly played back a Heart (my §9 was suit preference for Hearts) and I was able to ruff and then play the Diamond Ace to take the contract one off. South commented why didn’t you transfer to Hearts and then we play in Hearts. However as long as my partner finds the same defence we still take  4 tricks J 1 trick in each suit.

(NB Even without the suit preference signal, partner knows I only have one because declarer overcalled 1NT in the first instance and will certainly give me a Heart ruff.)

You can also view  watch the following movie to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.com/videos.html or BridgeBase programme on your machine already to view it )

alternatively watch the film www.haroldschogger.com/movies2.htm
