When this hand was
originally played against me declarer had counted his tricks carefully and set
off on the right path but eventually lost control of the hand when he could not
get back to draw the trumps.
Initially there are 7 winners :- 1 Spade, 4 trumps, and 2 Minor suit Aces. The
Diamond suit will certainly produce one more trick once the King has been
dislodged and if the trumps break no worse than 41 then you will get an extra
trump trick so just one more trick needs to be realized and it will have to come
from ruffing a Diamond in dummy. When the hand was played against me declarer
worked all this out and finessed the Diamond Queen at trick two. This meant
that later on the suit was blocked and he could not get back to hand to
draw the trumps. At trick two play dummy’s (J
which loses to the King. Now everything will work out fine. You take the
4th trick after ruffing the West’s Jack. You cash the Diamond Ace and ruff a
Diamond and merely draw trumps . No suit has been blocked and you have wrapped
up 10 tricks by way of 1 Spade, 5 trumps, 2 Diamonds, 1 Diamond ruffed and 1
Club. Even though the trumps broke badly you didn’t lose control.
