When you defend, you must count your winners, as you would do as a declarer,
On this hand prospects look pretty gloomy with South having doubled and an Opening hand on show in the dummy there is little prospect of partner having very much, perhaps 4/5 points at the most. You only seem to have one winner and to defeat the contract you need to find 3 more tricks.
There is one faint glimmer. If partner’s 4 points just happen to be the Heart Ace, you can now bring the total up to three defensive tricks and if you can also get a Heart Ruff then the contract will be down.
With this in mind at trick two, after winning your Diamond Ace, you boldly switch to your Heart King, pleasantly surprised to see it hold. Now you play a second Heart which partner takes with his Ace and duly gives you a ruff to take the contract one down.
Any other defence and declarer romps home.
You have won 2 Red Aces, King of Hearts and a Heart ruff to defeat the contract by one.
