At trick 1 after the §9 lead the book is a completely open hand as far as working out all the high Card Points. The lead now marks West with KQ of Clubs and the fact that West didn’t lead a Heart means that West has not got KQJ of hearts so East has KQ of Clubs and probably Q of Hearts too. This leaves West with all the remaining 12/13/14 points. KJ KJ and AJ.

In order to make the contract you will have to try and ruff losing Hearts in the short hand, North.

With this in mind you win first trick, and play Ace and another Heart. West wins and perseveres with Clubs. You ruff the third round and as expected West overruffs. West gets off lead with a Diamond and you cash your winning Diamonds before ruffing another club which gets overruffed West gets off lead with another Heart which you are able to ruff and you can now draw the last trump and claim just the 8 tricks
