When this was played against me my esteemed opponent was finesse mad and played King of Diamonds followed by low to the Jack . We now switched to Hearts and saw the contract go one down with the defence taking 2 Spades, 2 Hearts and the Diamond Queen.
Now lets replay the hand counting winners
After the lead of the Spades in the bag you have 2 spades, 2 Diamonds and 3 Clubs so you need to establish 2 more tricks.
Before embarking on the Diamond finesse. lets first try the clubs. If the clubs break 3:3 or the Jack of clubs falls in two rounds then the Diamond finesse is not needed, (if the clubs don’t behave then you can fall back on the Diamond finesse later in the hand)
You play three rounds of Clubs and when Jack falls claim you 9 tricks without putting your contract into jeopardy.
You make 5 clubs, 2 Diamonds and 2 Spades.
