After the lead you initially have 8 winners i.e. 1 Spade, 6 Hearts (even if there is a 5:0 break we have the top 6) and 1 club.

Therefore you will need to establish one extra trick in Diamonds and one in clubs.

To make your contract you will have to hope that the Diamond Ace is on your right so that the diamond finesse will be successful and that the King and Jack of clubs are split between the two defenders (ie playing for split honours) losing just two diamonds and 1 club.

With a shortage of entries to dummy it now makes sense to take an immediate club finesse playing the Queen from dummy. East covers and you can now make your ace knowing you will get a second club shortly.

Now play a trump to the ace and all follow. Overtake the second trump and draw the last trump.

Now take the Diamond finesse which wins. Now force out the Club Jack and claim your contract.

You made 6 trumps, 1 Spade, 1 Diamond and 2 clubs, losing just two Diamonds and 1 club.

(NB ha you played another spade at trick 2 both the King and Queen will have gone and your Jack would be established and now the contract would be even more safe)
