This hand comes from The Metropolitan Cup for Home Counties bridge. When we played this hand the opponents went onto 5¨ going two down against the making 4ª contract. However  in the other room there was no Opening 2¨ and eventually declarer went one off losing a trump, 2 diamonds and a club.

If declarer uses the knowledge that West has overcalled 4¨ pre-emptively then a) the trumps are likely to be breaking 3:1 and b) if anybody does have a singleton trump honour its more likely to be West the pre-emptor.

With this in mind after the opponents have taken the first three tricks with two top Diamonds and a top Club declarer must play the King of Spades first and when West drops the Queen he can now finesse East's remaining Jack and bring the trump suit home for no losers.
