When this hand was played against me the bidding was not particularly impressive but declarer more than made up for it in his play. I was somewhat surprised to lose 10 Imps on the board but it seems all the other NSs had not counted their winners and losers and they were also members of the "Always Brigade"

Initially without doing any work you have 4 Spade winners, 2 Diamond winners and 1 Club winner so you need to generate 3 more.

On the losers front you have 2 Heart losers, 1 Club loser and 1 maybe 2 Diamond losers so you will need to be careful. You will need to dump these losers somewhere.

Assuming trumps are no worse than 4:1 you will generate 1 extra Trump trick and once the AK of Hearts have gone you will generate 2 heart tricks bringing your total to 10. So where did all the other NS's go wrong? They were members of the "Always brigade" and must have drawn trump straight away (Always draw trumps UGH) . Now you cannot make the contract.

You will need to establish the Heart suit before touching trumps as "YOU NEED THE TRUMP SUIT AS ENTRIES" to dummy's established Hearts.

So after winning the second trick with the Ace now play a second Heart. West wins and plays another club to partner's King and East plays a third Club which you can now ruff.

Because you didn't play the spades early you can now draw trumps ending in dummy, pleased to see they break 3:2 and you can cash the two winning Hearts dumping the Diamond losers in hand.

You made 4 trumps, 2 established Hearts, 2 Diamonds 1 Club and 1 Club ruffed.

You can also play out the following hand  to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.com/movies.html )
