 People often talk about “ cross ruffing” when they do not know what they are talking about, More often than not, either they are ruffing and not achieving anything or they are ruffing in the short hand (ok) and also ruffing in the long hand (not OK)..

However, on this hand the hand will be ripe for a genuine cross ruff, after the opponents have played two rounds of Hearts.

After winning the second Heart play a Diamond to dummy’s King to create all the requirements needed for a cross ruff – void in one hand in one suit and different void in the other hand and same number of trumps in both hands.

East takes the second trick and switches to a trump.

You win the trick, and you now have an easy 11 tricks. You cash the top Diamond,  two top clubs  (you don’t want them ruffed away at the end of the hand do you ?) and then merely cross ruff your remaining Diamonds and clubs. (Nobody can overruff you) and you make all your trumps SEPARATELY  Playing the hand like this means you do not need to rely on Clubs breaking favourably.

You will make 2 Clubs. 1 established Diamond, 1 established Heart  1 natural trump, and 6 cross ruffs in Diamonds and Clubs
