Plan your defence - what do you lead against their 3NT contract ?

This hand comes from a recent Hubert Phillips match when I was partnering Maureen Dennison. Once the bidding was over, I was on lead and thought of 4th highest but this is not particularly productive with just a horrid 4 card suit and no entry prospects. I therefore decided to TRY & FIND PARTNER. Assuming the opponents had around 26-28 points this left room for partner to have some defensive values. What were they. ? The opponents had sailed into 3NT quite happily without any transfer or Stayman sequences so they weren't interested in Hearts. So if they didn't have hearts and I didn't have Hearts this meant my best chance of Finding Partner was to lead a heart.
Partner played the Heart Jack at trick 1 which brought the King from Declarer. Declarer now played Ace and another Spade and I decided to go with my gut instinct and persevere with Hearts. What a lovely surprise when partner turned up with 4 more tricks from this suit.
So next time you have a horrid hand and are defending a No Trump Contract TRY FINDING PARTNER. This is very good for partnership morale.
