Our hand this week is all about giving a suit preference signal and on this occasion at trick 1
Partner leads the Club Ace and you can see a singleton in dummy. What do you want to tell partner? You want to tell partner to switch to Spades so you drop the Club Nine at trick 1. This is a suit preference signal telling partner what suit you want next. He has to ignore the suit being played and the trump suit. This leaves just two suits so as the §9 is so relatively high you are telling partner to switch to Spades. With the Unusual No Trump Bid partner is showing 5:5 or better in the Minors and could have a singleton Spade.
Partner duly switches to ªK and you must overtake because it could well be a singleton. You cash the Queen and as suspected partner’s King was singleton and now you can give him a ruff. He cashes the Diamond Ace and you have taken the first five tricks and defeated declarer by three tricks for a very good Match point score 5 of a Minor was going one down
