This hand came from a recent Gold Cup Match and both teams rose to the challenge of getting their 10 tricks and its all a matter of counting winners and losers properly.

Initially you have 5 Spade winners, 2 Heart  winners and 1 Diamond winner totalling 8.

You are looking at least one loser in each suit except trumps. What you mustn’t do is create an extra loser in Diamonds . After the pre-empt the ¨7 is looking very much like a singleton.

Both declarers went up with the Ace at trick 1, drew trumps and went after the Hearts. When the Hearts broke 3:3 the thirteenth Heart provided a place to dump a Diamond loser from hand.

Declarer made 5 trumps, 2 Hearts 1 Diamond 1 established Diamond (only as the suit didn’t break well) and the thirteenth Heart.
