This hand comes from a classic bridge book by Marty Bergen called Points Schmoints and deals with the notion of NEVER GIVING UP.
After trick one you look at dummy and review the auction. From the bidding you know partner has ZILTCH. Therefore it seems you are only getting 3 defensive trick (two top Hearts and the Diamond Ace) Where the “hell” is the setting trick going to come from? There is just one faint glimmer on the horizon. Could partner have the ♠8 and if so, a trump promotion might take place.
On trick one partner Peters and after cashing a second Heart you are disappointed that partner turns up with two so declarer has two too J (can you say two too ?)
You cash your Diamond Ace and then play the third Heart a low one making partner ruff and you PRAY. Your bridge prayers are answered when lo and behold partner ruffs with the 8. Declarer has to overruff with the King and now miracle of miracles your Queen will win by this magnificent trump promotion all because you never gave up and all because you had a nice partner who held the Spade Eight.
