The hand this week concerns active or passive defence?
Having listened to the auction, it seems that South, declarer, must hold the missing Diamond King and is bidding 3NT to protect it, so if you were to lead a Diamond you might be giving declarer his contract or even furnishing him with overtricks.
With this in mind you decide to lead from your spade suit but which card? If you lead a small one, partner will expect you to have an honour, so adopt leading “second from bad suits” and lead the ª
Partner wins the first trick with the King and he looks at the dummy and realizes that playing back Spades would be futile (due to your 2nd from bad suit lead) and he works out that he must switch. He too can see the dummy and has listened to the auction and switches to Diamonds (around to dummy’s weak suit) TO YOUR RELIEF and plays the
♦9 and when declarer plays low you win with the Ten.Now you need to get partner back in, and from the first trick ,you know that partner has played the lowest of his two touching honours and must still have the Spade Ace. Surely, no declarer in his right mind would duck trick one if he had started with the Spade Ace. With this information, you now switch back to Spades at trick three delighted to see partner winning with the Ace and now playing another Diamond. You again win with the Jack and when you now play the Ace to take the contract one off you get even more pleased to see the King fall as you can now cash your last diamond and having taken the first six tricks you have taken the contract two down.
Pity partner has the last Diamond and you cannot take it three down.
(NB With an Active Diamond lead, declarer would make 1 Diamond, 5 Hearts and 6 clubs
