As West, what lead would you make against South’s 6NT contract ?

In the Teams Event in the 2004 Red Sea Festival, Richard Probst, an English Junior International, managed to flatten this board by finding the inspired 3 of Clubs lead. Having heard the auction, it seemed that South had all the suits sewn up as he had not gone back to his Hearts even though North had given 3 card Delayed support (the 3© bid). He therefore decided to put declarer to an immediate guess and make a lead through strength with the club lead. Poor declarer, not expecting anybody to lead from an Ace against a small slam contract played low and West’s Queen won the first trick. It was not difficult for East to play one back for a one trick defeat.

In the other room their opponents were playing in the normal 6© contract which was doomed with the unfortunate 5:0 division. Perhaps justice was seen to be done when Richard found the Club lead.
