4  is a splinter agreeing Spades, Game going values  and showing singleton Diamond

4NT is Roman Key Card for Spades

5 shows 1 key card

I thought this was the easiest hand in a long time but poor East got it wrong so there must be other people out there who cannot work out that playing two Aces immediately takes a small slam contract down.

West led 10 presumably top of a sequence (and also because East had doubled the 4 bid). After winning the first trick, East must think what Declarer has. If he has Heart Ace then declarer can successfully finesse spades and bring home his contract despite missing two key cards.

However, if declarer’s key card is the Spade king at trick two East has to switch to a Heart and now the contract goes one down.

When playing against me West passively played a trump and now I have no problems as I was able to chuck the Heart on dummy’s third round of clubs and bring home 12 tricks by way of 5 trumps, 3 Clubs, 4 Diamonds losing just the first trick

You can also view  watch the following movie to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.com/videos.html or BridgeBase programme on your machine already to view it )
