As a defender it is your duty to count winners in the same way that declarer would when the dummy is tabled.

From there bidding you know that South has a fistful of Clubs with nothing outside.

You know at trick one declarer probably has 7 Club winners and dummy’s Spade Ace and it is your duty not to lazily play back a second Heart and give declarer his 9^th trick.

In order to defeat the contract you will need to win  2 Hearts, 2 Diamonds and a Spade. Partner is marked with the Diamond Ace on the bidding.

At trick two as fast as lightning your ªKing should be on the table to establish the setting trick fro the defence. Also by playing a Spade at trick two you take out dummy’s only entry.

 (NB Why didn’t East compete with a Double ? South could have opened a Gambling 3NT- if the auction had been 3NT Passed out then a similar defence would be needed to stop Declarer quickly making 9 tricks)
