This hand from the Red Sea Bridge festival 2015 contains some rather bizarre bidding from East who bids to the three level by himself on a pile of you know what. However this is not a bidding problem, it’s a play problem and his bidding had now forced NS to the three level.
You lead the Ace of your partner’s suit and dummy has a singleton and partner follows suit with the ¨2. This is a SUIT PREFERENCE SIGNAL asking partner to make an immediate switch to clubs.
You obey and play your 2 which partner wins with the Queen on dummy’s Jack. He now cashes the Ace. Now it’s your turn to make a SUIT PREFERENCE SIGNAL and drop the §10 to now ask for a Spade switch. Partner duly wins the trick and obeys your orders and plays back a spade and you give him a ruff to take the contract one off with two suit preference signals from both of you- you have taken 1 diamond 2 clubs, 1 spade and 1 club ruff.
(NB Without these signals you might still get the defence right because you look at dummy and see at trick two your only hope is to switch to Clubs and then partner also looks at dummy and sees that the only way he can get back to you is to hope you hold the Spade Ace - here the suit Preference signals merely reinforce the defence- on another hand it could be vital J
