Initially you have 7 winners (i.e. without doing any work). The lead is friendly as it gives you a finesse at trick 1 with the lead coming around to your Ace Jack of Diamonds. So that brings the total to 8 winners now.

If you can get the clubs going you could hopefully get two more club tricks and if the hearts break kindly then there will be 2 more trumps bringing the total to 12.

With all this in mind, win the first trick in hand with the Jack after West follows suit with a low Diamond.

Now play two rounds of trumps pleased to see the suit breaking 3:2.. No need to draw the last trumps as surely the opponents would win and quickly take you off cashing 3 Spades. Use the Rule of 1 here where when there is one trump out which is higher than all yours, there is no need to draw it as it will only make once regardless.

Now play 3 rounds of Clubs throwing 2 losing Spades. The bridge gods are with you as West didn't have the last trump and was unable to trump the third Club. The club suit has not broken as well as you had hoped BUT you can now play a 4th Club and trump it.

Now go over to that carefully preserved Diamond King, your entry to the established Club and now make 12 tricks.

You made 2 top trumps, 3 Diamonds, 3 Clubs. 1 Club ruffed, 2 established Clubs,  and the last two trumps losing just the Heart Jack somewhere near  the end when East wanted to take it.

You can also play out the following hand  to see how the hand pans out. (You need bridgvu.exe programme  and it is available free from   http://www.haroldschogger.com/movies.html )
