On our hand this week I took a flyer and raised my partner to 6¨ knowing he probably had eight Diamonds and I was hoping he had shortage of Spades. I got lucky and he had the “right hand”. Was my esteemed partner Hkbenny up to the task in hand? He certainly was J
With 11 winners (8 Diamonds 1 Heart and 2 Clubs) he now had to find one more.
Would he take the Heart finesse or…..?
With East opening the bidding, it was odds on that the Heart King would be there, otherwise he might have opened 2♠ with long Spades and no outside strength. Therefore the Heart finesse was likely to fail. However, he could bring down the Heart king in three or four rounds and this would mean that the Queen would become established. He also had to leave an entry on the table to get back to the winning Queen. With all this in mind he trumped the second trick and embarked on setting up the Heart.
He played Ace and another Heart ruffing high (just in case) He entered dummy with a top trump and ruffed another Heart high pleased to see the Hearts breaking. He drew the last trump before going over to dummy via a top Club to ruff out East’s remaining King. He re-entered dummy with the very carefully preserved other top Club and cashed the winning Heart dumping the Club loser.
He wound up with 8 Diamonds, 1 Heart. 2 Clubs and 1 established Heart losing just the first trick.
