Nothing surprises me any more when I see so called competent players get the play wrong.
Here you analyze the lead and it seems partner has led from a Doubleton (or even a singleton) so after winning the first trick you should of course play the suit back. If partner cannot ruff straight away he will get his ruff in two tricks time when you get in with the Ace of trumps (Yes you have complete control of trumps don’t you?)
Declarer wins the second tricks and starts to draw trumps. You win straight away and give partner a a Spade ruff and after taking the Diamond Ace you and partner have taken the contract one off with 1 Spade, 1 Diamond, 1 Trump and 1 ruff,
When this hand was played against me East decided he wanted to do his own defence and switched to a Diamond. West won immediately and played another Diamond but East was unable to ruff as he started with a doubleton. Now declarer drew trumps. East would never get his ruff any way as dummy has 10987 of trumps. Apart from honouring his partner's defence perhaps he might occasionally look at the dummy
