When this hand was played against me the defence gave up and let ten tricks make.
Let's now replay.
After you encourage the first trick partner plays a second Spade to your 10.
What now?
In order to defeat this contract you will NEED 4 TRICKS.
You already have two and the bidding suggests that the most partner can now have is maybe one trick Maybe he has Diamond or Club Ace but that will not be enough to defeat the contract as you need two more.
Appreciate the power of your J109 of trumps. Partner has very little left but just maybe he has the ♥8 and if you play a third Spade there will be an eventual UPPERCUT with one of your hearts becoming high.
With all this in mind, play a third round of Spades.
Partner duly obliges and trumps with the ♥8 and now the contract will go one off. You will make 1 Diamond, 2 Spades and 1 trump. Never say die.
