On our hand this week we must count our tricks carefully.
Initially we have 2 Spades, 4 Hearts and 2 clubs. Therefore we need to find only 2 more.
If the trumps break no worse than 4: we will get an established trump.
If the Spades break 3:3 then we will get an extra Spade trick bringing our total to 10.
However if the Spades do not break we will be a trick short UNLESS we take out insurance!! What insurance can we take out? We can test the spades early before touching trumps. If the trumps now break badly (4:2) we still have a “high” trump on the table to ruff the last Spade,
So without much ado, we win the first trick and play three rounds of spades.
When we find Spades to be 4:2 we will be able to ruff the last Spade with the Jack of Hearts avoiding any potential over ruff and then draw trumps,
We will amass 5 trumps (from the long hand) 2 Spades, 2 Clubs and 1 Spade ruffed high.
(NB dummy started off with no shortages but we were still able to ruff in dummy “eventually”)
