On our hand this week West showed great discipline with his semi balanced 17 points and decided not to compete over 2©

Partner could not have very much so firstly he needed to make an active lead and secondly convey to partner he was looking for a ruff should partner have an entry, On the bidding it was unlikely.

Firstly, with AKX  one leads the Ace but with AK doubleton one does it the wrong way around to wake partner up. So, without much ado, West led the Diamond King followed by the Ace. Now partner was up to the task in hand and played his ¨9 on the second round of Diamonds to say he was after a Spade switch (Suit Preference). West now duly played Ace and another spade delighted to see East ruff the second round. East should know West want to ruff a Diamond but it never hurts to reinforce the signal so West played the ª8 back as another suit preference signal confirming he wanted the higher of the two remaining suits barring trumps ie Diamonds. West now played back his lowest Spade to now say he wanted a club return.

By the end of the hand and from all these super suit preference signals the defence realized 8 tricks taking declarer three off.
