How can you guarantee a good match Points score for bringing home 12 tricks after the opponents lead Ace King of Clubs ?

 

On top you have 10 tricks or top by way of 4 Spades, 5 Hearts and the Diamond Ace.

 

If you draw trumps you will be able to ruff a Diamond in the short hand (dummy) the total will come up to 11, but this is still not 12.

 

Let us count the tricks differently. Let us only count four natural trump winners (ie those in dummy), plus the 4 Spades and Diamond Ace (Total just 9). Now we can count THREE FURTHER tricks by way of ruffing 3 clubs in the long hand. By the time we have ruffed three clubs in this long hand, before drawing all the trumps, we have achieved a DUMMY REVERSAL.

 

So we ruff the second  club. (Dummy and declarer’s hand are now on equal terms (4 trumps each). We  enter dummy with the trump 10 to ruff another club thereby now making dummy the dominant trump hand (now dummy has 3 trumps left to declarer’s two. We enter dummy with a top  trump in order to ruff out our last Club. We enter dummy with the Spade Ace draw the remaining trump and claim the rest for a very good match point score.
