Partner leads ¨10 and declarer plays low from dummy plan your defence.
Sometimes players are far too in a hurry to fire back their partner’s suit without any forethought. With so many Diamonds you might think partner has a singleton Diamond and you might wish to give partner a ruff. If however partner has a doubleton you could easily allow declarer a chance to dump a losing club on the third round of Diamonds after Declarer has drawn trumps. Before attempting to give partner a Diamond ruff, it doesn’t cost to play the Club Ace to see if partner encourages or not. If partner does have a singleton Diamond he will certainly discourage and you can now play back another Diamond, but if he encourages Clubs then you can quickly take your club tricks.
With all this in mind, after winning the first trick you play the Club Ace and partner duly encourages and you continue with another one. You will now amass 4 defensive tricks by way of a Diamond, 2 Clubs and the Heart Ace. NB Had you played a second Diamond immediately then declarer will prevail and his Diamond loser will disappear on the third round of Diamonds after drawing trumps.
