Having got over the shock of not being in the safer haven of 4©, you win the first trick and advance the ©3 and West immediately plays the Ace despite seeing the KJ in dummy. What do you deduce ? He must be holding just a singleton Ace otherwise he would surely have played low. (Aren’t we all taught as defenders Second hand plays low ?). That’s good we now have all the Hearts established. But, look again if we carelessly play low from dummy the suit will be blocked. We must unblock the Heart King or Jack . Now, whatever West plays back we will be in the driving seat.
We can cash the remaining high honour in dummy and finesse the ©9 when we get back to hand now making an astonishing 10 or even 11 tricks if West hasn’t cashed out.
